Strawberry Picking NJ Should Feel Simple When You Get Here

Strawberry picking should feel easy from the moment you arrive at Peterson Family Farm. We are your local family farm in Flemington, and we want you, your kids, and your whole family to feel comfortable when you come out to pick. If this is your first time visiting us for strawberries, you do not need to know everything before you get here. We will help you check in, get started, and understand where to go before you head into the field.

Our 2026 strawberry picking season opens Friday, May 29. There is no entry fee to enter the strawberry field, pick-your-own strawberries are $5.50 per pound, and pre-picked strawberries are $10 per quart when available. When you arrive, you will park near our little red farm stand, check in with us, weigh any baskets or bags you brought from home, head out to pick, and then come back to weigh and pay for your berries. The process is simple, but strawberry availability can change with weather and field conditions, so we always recommend checking back or calling before you visit.

1Pull Down The Driveway And Come See Us At The Farm Stand

When you arrive at Peterson Family Farm, pull down the driveway and park near our little red farm stand. That is where your strawberry picking visit begins. Before you head out to the field, come check in with us so we can explain where to go and what the picking looks like that day. If you have questions, we are happy to point you in the right direction.

Our strawberry field changes throughout the season because berries ripen at different times and weather can affect what is ready. Some days have more ripe berries than others, especially early in the season. Checking in first helps us give you the most useful information before you start picking. It also helps make sure baskets, bags, and field directions are handled before your family heads out.

2Bring Your Own Basket Or Use One Of Ours

You can bring your own basket or bag for strawberry picking, and we also have baskets available if you need one. If you bring your own container, we weigh it before you start picking. That way, you do not pay for the weight of your basket, box, or bag when you come back from the field. When you are done picking, we weigh everything again and charge only for the berries.

This is one of the details that makes the visit easier once you understand it. You do not need to buy a special container before coming to the farm. If you have something easy to carry, bring it with you and we will weigh it before you pick. If you forget a container or decide not to bring one, ask us at check-in and we will help you get set up.

If You Bring Your Own Basket Or Bag If You Need A Basket
We weigh it before you pick We have baskets available
The container weight is deducted You can still pick without bringing one
You pay for berry weight only Ask us at check-in before heading out
Bring something easy to carry We will help you get started

3Head Out To The Field And Pick What You Want

After check-in, you can head out to the strawberry field and pick what you want. Some families come for a smaller amount to eat fresh, while others pick more for freezing, baking, jam, or sharing. Since pick-your-own strawberries are sold by weight, you can decide how much makes sense for your family once you are in the field. You are not paying a flat fee to enter, so the visit can be as simple or as full as you want it to be.

We do ask everyone to walk carefully in the strawberry field. Strawberry plants grow low to the ground, and fruit can sit under the leaves or along the edge of the row. Running through the rows can damage the plants, flowers, and fruit that other visitors may be able to pick later. Kids are welcome, and we love seeing families enjoy the field, but we ask parents to keep an eye on children so the crop stays protected.

  • Walk slowly through the rows.
  • Watch where you step.
  • Keep children from running in the field.
  • Stay in the area where we direct you.
  • Ask us if you are not sure where to pick.
  • Be gentle around the plants and berries.

4Come Back To Weigh Your Berries And Pay

When you are done picking, bring your strawberries back to the farm stand area so we can weigh them. If you brought your own basket or bag, we already weighed it before you picked, so the final price is based on the berries. Pick-your-own strawberries are $5.50 per pound for the 2026 season. Pre-picked strawberries are $10 per quart when they are available.

There is no entry fee to enter the strawberry field. We do have a $5 minimum strawberry purchase per person for visitors age 4 and older. This is not an entrance fee. It simply means each person age 4 and older has a minimum strawberry purchase connected to the visit.

Visit Cost Detail 2026 Information
Entry Fee No entry fee
Pick-Your-Own Strawberries $5.50 per pound
Pre-Picked Strawberries $10 per quart, when available
Minimum Purchase $5 per person age 4 and older
Payment Cash, check, or card

For example, if a family of four picks $19 worth of strawberries, the total would be $20 because of the minimum purchase. If that same family picks $21 worth of strawberries, they would pay $21 because they picked more than the minimum. This helps keep the field open without charging a separate admission fee. It also keeps pricing tied to the berries you bring home.

5Bring The Whole Family

Strawberry picking is a great family activity because it is simple, hands-on, and easy for kids to understand. When children come to the field, they get to see where strawberries grow and take part in picking the fruit themselves. They do not need a complicated activity or a long schedule to enjoy it. They usually have the most fun when the visit is clear, relaxed, and easy to follow.

We want your family to feel welcome when you come to Peterson Family Farm. There is a bathroom available, and we may have other vegetables for sale near the farm stand depending on what is ready. The visit works well for families because you can pick the amount you want, pay by weight, and keep the trip as short or as long as your group needs. The main thing we ask is that children stay with their adults and walk carefully in the field.

  • Kids are welcome.
  • A bathroom is available.
  • There is no entry fee.
  • You can pick the amount you want.
  • Farm baskets are available if needed.
  • Other vegetables may be available for sale.
  • Children should not run in the rows.
  • Dogs are not allowed.
  • Picnicking is not allowed on the farm.
A better visit starts with a simple rhythm: park, check in, pick carefully, return to weigh, and head home happy.

6Know The Main U-Pick Policies Before You Visit

We try to keep strawberry picking simple, but a few policies help us protect the farm, the crop, and everyone visiting. You do not need an appointment to visit during available picking times. We do ask that you leave dogs at home because of insurance and USDA food safety regulations. We also do not allow picnicking on the farm, so please plan your visit around picking and taking your berries home.

Timing matters too, especially if you plan to come later in the day. Our fields close one hour before the farm closes so visitors have enough time to pick and check out. If you arrive too close to closing, there may not be enough time to go into the field. We accept cash, check, and card, so you have several ways to pay when you return from picking.

Policy What It Means For Your Visit
No Appointment Needed You do not need to reserve a picking time
No Dogs Please leave pets at home
No Picnicking Plan your visit around picking
Fields Close One Hour Before Closing Arrive early enough to pick
Payment Options Cash, check, or card accepted

These policies are not meant to make the visit difficult. They help us keep the farm safe, clean, and organized during a busy seasonal window. Strawberry season is short, and many families look forward to coming out. A few clear expectations help everyone have a better visit.

7Check Current Picking Details Before You Come

Even when strawberry season is open, the field can change from day to day. Strawberries ripen in stages, and weather can affect how many berries are ready at one time. Rain, heat, cool nights, and busy picking days can all change field conditions. Pre-picked quarts also depend on what we have available that day.

That is why we recommend checking back or calling before you visit. The website can give you the main details, but current field conditions are the most important piece of information during strawberry season. If picking is strong, we want you to know. If availability is more limited, we want you to know that too before you make the trip.

What To Check Why It Helps
Pick-Your-Own Availability Ripe fruit changes by day
Pre-Picked Availability Quarts depend on what is ready
Field Conditions Rain and weather can affect picking
Hours Fields close before the farm closes
Current Updates The farm has the most accurate information

8Your Visit From Start To Finish

The whole visit follows a simple order. You pull down the driveway, park near the little red farm stand, check in with us, weigh your basket if you brought one, head into the strawberry field, pick what you want, return to weigh your berries, and pay by weight. If you need a basket, we can help. If you have questions, ask us before you head out.

Strawberry picking is one of our favorite ways to welcome families back to the farm each spring. We are excited to have you and your whole family here for the season. Please check back or call before visiting so we can give you the most current picking details for the day. When you know what to expect before you arrive, your visit starts easier and your time in the field feels more relaxed.
